The Nutcracker at the Bristol Hippodrome
ANY little girl who saw one of three classic ballets at the Bristol Hippodrome last week will dream of becoming a prima ballerina.
The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty were performed by the Russian State Ballet of Siberia to packed audiences of all ages, including my three-year-old daughter who was left awestruck by the sheer capabilities of these glittering performers.
Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker is the tale of a little girl who is given a previous gift on Christmas Eve but as she falls asleep in front of the festive tree, still clutching her beloved Nutcracker, all the toys come to life transporting her to a magical world.
Told only through the power of music and dance, an army of mice, dazzling snowflakes, and a royal court with an array of impressive dance displays from Arabic to Russian and Japanese to Spanish senoritas were captivating in this take on the classic fairytale.
The orchestra was timed to perfection and the ballerinas made their gruelling routines look like a walk in the park.
As many members of the audience could be heard commenting at the end of the second act, it was simply beautiful.
