The Railway Children
Rangeworthy Players at Rangeworthy Memorial Hall
A STAGGERING amount of time and effort went into this production, the Players’ take on a classic story.
With countless scene changes and lighting cues, the show also boasted an elaborate railway station, tunnel and cottage and to give the effect of a working station a projector screen was utilised during parts of the play.
This was a mammoth project for an amateur group to take on but their efforts have paid off as the production proved a runaway success.
The story of privileged London siblings Roberta (Hope Howard), Phyllis (Antonia Parker Smith) and Peter (Ben Townsend) who have to move to their country when times get hard has been read to children the world over for decades.
The trio soon find adventure in their surrounds and befriend an old gentleman (Paul Binding) aboard the morning train every day. But their father’s absence leads to financial woes and it is not long before they find themselves asking their new acquaintance for help.
The youth section of the Players shone through in their latest offering, particularly the talents of Hope Howard, but the real star of the show was the set design.
