Located close to Dursley, Cam is essentially three distinct areas or settlements: Cam Village; Upper Cam (Cam Green) and Woodfield which is primarily a housing development.

With the River Cam running through the village Cam would have developed as a direct result of the flourishing wool industry. Whilst there still remains several mills these are no longer operated by water power and are simply a reminder of the area's past. However, despite the lack of industry Cam remains a relatively thriving area.

The main shopping facilities include a large Co-op Supermarket, chemist, newsagent, ladies' dress shop, hardward shop, gift shop, hairdressers, bakery, fish and chip and pizza takeaway.

There are also a doctors surgery and dentist and four primary schools, pre-school facilities although children of senior school age have to travel further afield.

For a relatively small area Cam is fortunate to have the services of a railway station with links to Gloucester and Bristol and a reasonable bus network connecting it to Stroud and its environs.

The area is centrally located being relatively close to the cultural centres of Bath, Bristol and Gloucester and within easy reach of the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean.
