DESPITE a terrible summer of weather that nearly put paid to this year's Berkeley Show, the event was a great success on Monday.

Local people supported the 106th Berkeley Show in their thousands and were rewarded with a great day out.

Show secretary Christine Carter said: 'We were very busy and this was a great boost for the local community after the year we have had.

"Just ten days before the show the committee had to decide whether we could go ahead after all the flooding. We saw that the long-range weather forecast was settled so we could. A few more days of rain and we would have had to pull out as the water table is so high.

"We could not have livestock classes this year after the foot and mouth outbreak, which appears to have been contained, as non-essential animal movements are still banned.

"But, we had lots of great attractions this year which drew the crowds in and we had lots of positive feedback that people really enjoyed them.

"Berkeley Show lived up to its reputation as a good local show. people really enjoyed being able to have a day out in the country in good weather for a change."

As well as the big horse and pony competitions there was an exemption dog show won by Sue Thorn's Dobermann bitch, Nina (pedigree name Cosajoro Nina Simone), who won Best in Show.

There were displays by vintage tractors, heavy horses, hounds, Wessx owls, dairy bygones and River Severn fishing baskets and nets.

Shopaholics enjoyed the farmers' market and many trade stands.

The show was held on the meadow that was flooded in July when the Joust festival had to be canceled.

(BLOB) the winners of the Gazette's cash prize drawn at the show are: Hilary Pearce of Waterley Bottom (£50), E Morse of Pilning (£25) and David Hurst of Kingswood, Bristol( £25).
