A CARING Marlwood School student has won national recognition in an award scheme set up in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Oliver Brooks, 16, from Thornbury, has received a Diana Award for his efforts to help a fellow pupil with a disability.

Oliver - known as "Olly" - was nominated by the school for going "above and beyond" what might be expected to support his friend, fellow Year 11 student Kirsty Schofield, a wheelchair user, in and around the school.

Kirsty wrote her own tribute to her friend, listing the many ways Olly helps her get through the day - from assisting her from class to class to helping her at lunchtimes.

"He has done these things and more for the past five years and we have become closer friends because of it," said Kirsty.

"He has been there for me when I have been upset and he makes me laugh when I am not in a good mood.

"We meet up occasionally at weekends and go to The Mall where he helps me get things if I can't.

"I couldn't have got this far without his help. He has been a true friend to me."

Olly's certificate - countersigned by prime minister-to-be Gordon Brown - was presented to him by Kirsty during a recent Year 11 leavers service.

Beverley Oldfield, head of personal development at Marlwood, said: "Olly truly merits this recognition, although the last thing he was looking for was any kind praise or reward.

"The school is very proud of him indeed."

Marlwood head teacher Keith Geary said: "We are all delighted to hear of Olly's award. He is an unsung hero who fully deserves this recognition for the unstinted support he has given to another pupil. He is an example to all of us - pupils and adults."

The Diana Awards were established in 1999 to celebrate the innate qualities of courage, commitment, compassion and selfless service to others of young people aged 12 to 18 years old, demonstrated through their contribution to and impact on their schools, communities and society.

They are seen by some as the children's equivalent of the honours system and organisers say it has a lasting impact on the lives of those who receive them.
