PUPILS and staff at a primary school have an infectious enthusiasm for maths, according to Ofsted inspectors.

A one-day inspection judged Cam Everlands School to be good in maths and commended staff on their teaching skills.

The inspection focused on pupils' enjoyment and understanding as well as overall standards in maths and the data will go towards a national Ofsted survey on the subject.

The school, in Birch Road, was complimented for the pupils' positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning mathematics.

Ofsted inspector, Carole Skinner, said: "Pupils enjoy mathematics lessons a great deal and speak with enthusiasm about the way they are taught.

"They concentrate well and work sensibly, both independently and when working with a partner."

Teachers at the school were praised for making learning enjoyable and their good knowledge of the subject.

"There is a strong focus on learning through hands-on activities that relate well to pupils' daily experiences," said Mrs Skinner.

"The subject manager is bubbling with enthusiasm for mathematics. She provides good support and guidance for colleagues in every class.

"The headteacher has a good overview of the subject and evaluates the quality of teaching and learning in collaboration with the subject manager."

Two areas that were identified as needing improvement were tracking pupils' progress throughout the year to identify early signs of underachievement and developing pupils' skills in explaining strategies in clear mathematical language.

Ian Dixon, headteacher at the school, said: "We are delighted with this Ofsted judgement. Mathematics is a subject that adults often remember without enthusiasm so we are doubly pleased that our pupils' enjoyment as well as understanding has been recognised.

"The whole Cam Everlands community can be proud of the inspection findings."
