Giles is still up for the play-offs

CHRIS GILES issued a rallying call to his Forest Green team-mates this week, writes Ashley Loveridge.

The popular centre-back is confident that Jim Harvey's side can edge into the play-offs, but he insists Rovers will only have themselves to blame if they fail with just nine games of the Blue Square Premier season remaining.

He said: "The lads are up for it and we honestly believe we can sneak in there with a late run and make the play-offs."

Rovers face Woking on Good Friday and then travel to Torquay on Easter Monday, but Giles is confident Rovers' upturn in form will prove decisive.

He added: "We know Woking are solid, but we just need to go out there in the right frame of mind and do everything we can to win on Friday and at Torquay on Monday.

Meanwhile, Ishmael Welsh's decision to see out the season at the New Lawn has left Jim Harvey a happy man.

The Yeovil Town winger was prominent for Forest Green in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Halifax Town. A knock forced him off after the break, but Harvey is confident he will be fine for the busy Easter period.

Harvey said: "Ish is very, very quick and talented, plus he can get in behind defenders and create opportunities."

Nope, I give up... Where is the rest of the senior football in this week's paper? Four local reports (six if we include the beloved FGR)? The highest ranking clubs in the Dursley Gazette area played each other last weekend (Berkeley 1 Wotton 0) but that seems to be a secret, while Cam's 4-1 win at Bishop's Cleeve only gets mentioned in passing in the Slimbridge report. No Kingswood first team report either. Are these games not worth finding out about? For those of us who like to keep up with all the local teams, this coverage is pretty poor.

I've said from day one in the job that I'm approachable so if anyone wants to discuss the way I lay out the sports pages I'm on 01453 540228.

No discussion required. The Gazette is the local paper for the aforementioned teams and it fails to cover them, which many people find disappointing.

Spectator,Dursly the solution is in your own hands. The Gazette does not have the resources to send reporters to local games of any code. However as you will see from the sports pages it welcomes reports from clubs and this is what the local rugby clubs do. If you want your club mentioned why not write a report yourself. I do for Thornbury RFC 3rd XV and they always get published even if edited.

I see the point you make Mr Bowker, but that is not what I am getting at. The club I follow appears, I just like to keep up with all the other ones too - to keep things in context, if you like. All the local clubs were covered in some way each week in the past, even if it was quite brief. I realise that it is the job of the clubs themselves to send in reports, but it has all been rounded up in the past, so why not now?

Maybe I can help in this little tete a tete. Howard (How I miss wondering what the multi-talented Dave Mead is up to this week), is right in saying a lack of resources mean that reports should be submitted by the clubs. However, a lot of them don't bother, especially if they are losing regularly (which is certainly true this season of Wotton, Berkeley and often Cam). I always wanted the major teams in each week regardless, so I found time to give someone a ring or expand on a report from another source (internet, the Citizen). Ultimately, I ended up doing at least three or four hours of overtime a week to do what I wanted to do, which is not ideal. Although there will always be readers who are just interested in their own team, there are more, in my opinion, who are like 'Spectator', whoever he or she is. I know this because these type of people knock about in the clubhouses of Cam Bulldogs/Dursley Town etc and they always bent my ear about it when I was playing. As for the number of reports, I used to take on a daft workload. Last season, when playing for Cam, I would do a first team report because the manager knew I covered the Northern Senior League teams each week, the reserves because I played for them, the thirds because they asked me to and the ladies because my girlfriend plays for them and I was the coach. Add them to the teams playing Northern Senior Two or better and that is already a lot of reports and a great deal of work for me if not many reports were sent in. Rob, my replacement, will run the sports desk as he sees fit and can't be expected to do things exactly the same. He seems to spend more time on interviews and there just is not the time to do everything I used to as well.

Again, I understand what you say Keith, but I still say that the current situation is not good enough. Several teams (Berkeley, Cam, Wotton) get no coverage at all and it means the reports that do appear from other teams lose much of their importance as they lack context. Also, there just isn't as much to read as there used to be.

Obviously I would back up some of the good points that Howard and Keith make but that doesn't mean I won't listen to other people who think differently. If anyone ever approaches me I will always respect their opinion, and possibly take some new ideas on board. I would like to invite 'Spectator' to give me a call, perhaps I can clear things up a bit more. I will be back in the office on Easter Monday so I can get through all of the local sport that took place over the weekend.
