Berkeley team looking to make national mark

BERKELEY R US' are looking for some success as they prepare for their first national open team chase championships on Sunday.

The Gloucestershire team is made up of farrier Simon Vatcher and his wife Vicky, and also Wotton based equine vet Nelson Rowe and his wife Thomasia.

They qualified for the event in Leicestershire, which is run by the Fernie Hunt, by finishing fifth in a qualifying round earlier this month in the VWH hunt, held near Cirencester.

Nelson Rowe admits his team has little chance of winning, but has still set his sights high on a good debut championships.

He said: "It's the first time we've qualified so we'll be looking to get three or four members around, and try to get a competitive time.

"A lot of teams go out and either win or fall off trying. I'd be surprised if we were able to win it, but I'd love to be in the top five."

Over a two and half kilometre country course, the teams aim to get three horses home in the quickest time possible.

Rowe added: "The course is twisty, it will be up and down hills, and the horse has to be very fit.

"You have to take risks, cut corners and take fences at angles to reduce the time."
