Synwell boxers succeed at event

THE second Synwell Boxing Club tournament of the season was held at the Lister Hall, Dursley.

18 superb bouts of boxing and enthusiastic crowd support made the evening a great success.

The Wotton-under-Edge club were involved in eight of the bouts competing against clubs that had travelled from all over England and Wales.

First in the ring for Synwell was 11 year-old Bryn Whitmore, his opponent was Levi Griffiths. The three-round contest started as it finished with Whitmore the more aggressive boxer, taking the fight to the taller and faster Griffiths. He forced the Fairfield boxer to rely on his counter-punching skills, whilst retreating as Whitmore gained points from head and body shots. The result at the end of a close fought contest was a majority points decision, with Whitmore the winner.

13 year-old Billy Aldridge's opponent was Michael Harbottle. Again, this was a very close fought contest, with Aldridge taking the fight to the shorter, stockier Harbottle who stood his ground, catching the more skilful Aldridge as he worked to his opponent's head and body. The result was a majority points victory to Harbottle.

14 year-old Jake Heal had his work cut out against Michael Hallimond.

His strong Durham opponent did not make it easy for the Synwell boxer. By standing his ground Hallimond tried to exchange punch for punch with Heal. It was with relief for the Synwell club that after an extremely hard fought contest Heal obtained a unanimous points win.

15 year-old Mitchell Lever's opponent was Nathan Phillips. Phillips, the taller boxer with a long reach, made it difficult for the quicker, harder punching Lever, who for the three rounds pressured Phillips with punches to head and body. This was countered by Phillips who rocked Lever several times with hard punches to the head. It was not quite enough for the Durham boxer as Lever was given the majority points victory.

15 year-old Connor Jones was matched against Wesley Jones. This contest saw the Synwell boxer and his opponent exchange punches in what became an untidy bout as the Welsh boy was unable to fathom a way around the Synwell boxer's right-hand lead southpaw style. The result of this contest was a unanimous points decision to Connor Jones.

Synwell was represented by three senior boxers. The first to compete was Johnathon Scott, who took on Francis Lynn.

In what was a very hard fought contest, in which hard punches were exchanged, and both boxers receiving standing counts after being stunned by these exchanges, the stronger boxer on the night gained the victory, Lynn on a unanimous points victory.

The last two Synwell contestants of the evening were boxing for the first time. Dominic Horton was matched against Brett Lehaj.

The contest was first class with Horton showing skills and patience beyond his limited experience, waiting for opportunities to pick up points with punches to head and body. After three rounds of entertaining boxing Horton was announced the winner with a unanimous points victory.

Ryan Stephenson's opponent was Craig Lintern. This first bout for Stephenson caused the crowd to rise to the occasion with chanting and cheering that created an atmosphere that most present had not experienced. The contest proved to be a real crowd pleaser, with big, hard punches being exchanged in an all-action bout.

What the boxers lacked in skills was made up for in courage as they traded and rocked each other with heavy blows. The bout ended with Lintern just managing to stay on his feet after a massive onslaught by Stephenson., who won with a unanimous decision.

With ten other support bouts of exceptional quality it was a good night for the Synwell club, boxing, and the supporters who had a night to remember.
