Happy Easter for Uley after two victories

Stroud League Division Two; Tibberton United 1, Uley 2

ULEY returned to the peak of Division Two with a well deserved win against tough opponents Tibberton United.

Uley were determined to pay back their opponents for a defeat earlier this season.

The windy conditions meant this game would always be tight, however Uley's battling spirit once again came to the fore.

Despite a lively start from the visitors, a freak goal direct from a corner put Uley on the back foot.

Nevertheless, Uley were always in control and the mazy runs of Toby Gardner and the probing passing of Rich Kemp and Ash Caldwell paved the way for them to gain the upper hand.

Chris Lambert, making his first start of the season, scored the equaliser and then James Stennett grabbed the first half winner with a headed finish that can only be described as sublime.

The second half was extremely cagey with Uley maintaining the lead and the lion's share of the possession. Neither goalkeeper had much to do in this half, though Chris Dimery and Dan Walton should have done better with two short-range efforts late on in the match.

Uley 5, Brimscombe & Thrupp 2

ON Easter Monday, Uley had the opportunity to extend their lead over their nearest rivals with the visit of Brimscombe, who were looking to improve their own position at the foot of Division Two.

Uley made a confident start and soon found themselves two goals up. Steve King and Ash Caldwell netted, as both goals were products of good passing football, with Chris Clark and Toby Gardner with the vital assists.

However, complacency cost Uley their advantage, as Brimscombe showed the fighting spirit they will undoubtedly require for the remainder of the season if they harbour hopes of escaping relegation. Two well worked goals either side of half-time brought parity in the match.

A tactical switch halfway through the second half made by Lee Billy proved the turning point. Altering the formation in the centre of the park allowed Uley to utilise their wide players more.

King and Gardner were suddenly at the forefront of Uley's attacking exploits. It was King latching onto Rich Kemp's pass that allowed James Stennett to restore Uley's lead.

This goal effectively knocked the stuffing out of the visitors, and Uley proceeded to dominate the last 20 minutes.

Stennett was able to put Scott Gearon's long ball home for the fourth and Gardner got his well deserved goal with a good low finish following a great flick-on by Paul Jennings.

Uley could have added more but for some brave goalkeeping and poor finishing. King came closest to scoring the goal of the game only for the crossbar to deny him.

Uley have now built up a four point advantage at the top of the table and will look to extend it further next week with a visit to Longford.
