TURNOUT for the Gloucestershire PCC election has been low with less than a fifth of the county’s residents turning up to vote.
Stroud district registered 16,403 votes out of the 90,955 eligible, meaning an 18 per cent turnout.
In total, Gloucestershire saw a turnout of 17.1 per cent, with 80,618 of the county’s 472,376 registered voters visiting polling stations yesterday to elect the new Police and Crime Commissioner.
The county’s other districts also saw a poor attendance, with Cotswold district returning 19.8 per cent, Gloucester 15.7 per cent, Cheltenham 17.6 per cent, Forest of Dean 14.8 per cent and Tewkesbury 16.4 per cent.
The counters will now allocate votes to their respective candidates, as well as noting spoiled votes.
If no candidate reaches 50 per cent of the total votes in the first round, the two candidates with the most votes go into the second round.
The others are eliminated from the contest and their votes are re-counted for their second choices which will then be allocated to the two candidates left standing.
This continues until one hopeful reaches 50.1 per cent of the vote.
The declaration at Stratford Park Leisure Centre in Stroud is predicted to come at around 1pm.
