DURSLEY Day Centre experienced the full power of the generous festive spirit after it sold all 1,500 tickets for its Christmas raffle.

After finally getting the figures in, the raffle netted £238 by selling tickets at 20p each, with the sum further boosted by £150 raised from the cake and bric-a-brac stalls held at the centre on May Lane.

In addition, a grant from Dursley Town Council of £1,000 will go towards replacing the centre’s windows and drainage system.

Secretary of the Dursley Day Centre committee Gillian Davis explained how vital people's generosity was to the centre.

“It is so important to us. We totally rely on what we can make with events like this and donations because it is a registered charity,” she said.

“We do need to sort out the heating as it is almost 50-years-old so is really past its sell by date.”

The other major thing we want to get done is the toilets which really need to be brought up to date, but we must take things step by step.”

We want to thank the people who have supported the day centre over the years as well as our volunteers.”

The centre is looking to boost visitor numbers to its Wednesday lunch club where people can apply to be picked up and join others for a spot of lunch.
