YOUNGSTERS in Thornbury will take matters in their own hands as they grill the charity hoping to take over their youth centre.

The Youth Forum, formed to give teenagers and local students the opportunity to shape the future of Thornbury, will discuss the local authority’s plans to stop funding their youth club.

On Monday, January 28 its members will meet with representatives from Christian charity Krunch, the organisation interest in taking over the centre based at Turnberrie’s, to examine its proposal and vision for the town.

Krunch is currently the local authority's preferred bidder to run the club, known as Area 35.

The youths will also survey the services and activities already available in the town, offered by various volunteer groups, and consider ways to improve provision for young people.

Cllr Helen Harrison, who was instrumental in the creation of the Youth Forum back in May, said: "A representative from Krunch will be giving some info on their bid, and we will also be chatting about what other opportunities there already are for young people in Thornbury, as well as what they would like to see."

Following the meeting, they will report their findings to town councillors as well as members of the local "visioning" group made up of most of Thornbury’s youth and volunteer organisations.

Cllr Maggie Tyrrell told the Gazette it was very important for young people to play an active role in the decision-making process.

She said: "We are very keen that we communicate better with young people. We make decisions on their behalf and we really want them to be involved. We will listen to any young people that come forward with a view."

The 20 members of the Youth Forum are hoping their peers will turn up en masse to the meeting to ensure the views of the majority are represented.

The youth forum is open to residents of Thornbury aged between 12 and 18.
