DID you feel jubilant last summer? Do you want to recapture a little of the celebratory spirit of 2012? People who do are being invited to a meeting in Chipping Sodbury next week.
Last year a committee of volunteers organised two days of events to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, including a community street party in Broad Street, which was enjoyed by hundreds of local families.
Committee member Alexandra Womack is planning to hold a second Sodbury Street Party on Sunday, June 2 this year and is appealing for volunteers to come forward and help.
“I loved every minute of the Sodbury Jubilee celebrations last year and was enthused to organise another street party after some really positive feedback and the sight of so many people coming together for a truly British street party,” she said.
“The 2013 event ties in with the national Big Lunch initiative, which aims to encourage neighbours and communities to come together for one day in the year, share some food, maybe a few drinks and generally enjoy each other's company and the atmosphere.
“It will also be 60 years since The Queen was crowned and therefore lends itself to such a street party.”
Initial plans would see Broad Street closed to traffic with families encouraged to bring their own food and drink, tables and chairs and gazebos if necessary.
Pubs, cafes and some shops will also hold special outdoor stalls and there will be a children’s fancy dress competition and entertainment possibly including live music and a dance act.
Anyone who would like to get involved in organising the event is welcome to an inaugural meeting being held on Monday, February 4 (7.30pm) at The Squire Inn, Chipping Sodbury.
