A WOTTON secondary school has secured £150,000 of Olympic legacy funding.

Katharine Lady Berkeley’s school (KLB) has been awarded funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.

This is part of the £150 million Places People Play legacy programme aimed at carrying the Olympic and Paralympic spirit into communities across the country.

KLB had been awarded the substantial sum to upgrade their sports centre, which is used by local clubs as well as the school’s 1500 students.

The money will be spent on refurbishing changing facilities and toilets, improving the games hall itself and installing a lit path to playing surfaces being developed on private land beyond the school boundary.

The third round of the Olympic Legacy funding was announced on Friday, January 25, exactly six months after the London 2012 Olympics began.

Nationally £16.6million of National Lottery funding will be invested in 310 local projects.

Gillian Hayward, chairman of governors at KLB said the school was delighted with the award.

She said: "By renovating these facilities, we can increase the breadth of activities, events and fun experiences available and therefore improve support to our students, their families and to the communities we serve."

Shane Blackshaw, finance and business director at KLB added: "We’re really pleased. It’s not often that you get good news to this effect.

"Without it it’s unlikely that the work would take place in the foreseeable future."

KLB was one of five beneficiaries in the county, which include Cheltenham Saracens RFC and Tewkesbury Rugby Club.

John Stevens, chief executive of Active Gloucestershire, described the awards as great news for sport in Gloucestershire.

He said: "There has been a significant surge in involvement in sport following the Olympics and Paralympics and it is vital that local club facilities are up to date and capable of responding to this increase if we are to maintain momentum behind increased involvement."
