A 38-year-old man arrested following an alleged hit-and-run in Hanham has been charged with causing the death of Fishponds couple Ross and Clare Simons by dangerous driving.

Nicholas Lovell, of West Street, in Oldland Common has been charged with two offences of death by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving with no insurance and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

A 35-year-old woman, who was also arrested in connection with the crash, remains on police bail.

Ross Simons, 34, and his wife Clare, 30, were riding a tandem on Lower Hanham Road at around 4pm on Sunday when they were knocked off their bike by a blue Citroen. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ross worked for his father’s property rental company while Clare had a job at Topshop in Cabot circus.

The couple from Fishponds, who had been married for a year and a half, had just been given the go-ahead for IVF treatment to start a family.

More than 100 friends and relatives attended a vigil at the scene of the crash on Monday night.
