POPULAR high streets stores will be leaving The Mall at Cribbs Causeway this year while others will downsize or switch units.

Change is brewing for the shopping centre which is due to lose at least five of its current chains and see three others become smaller concessions within large department stores.

Burton, Miss Selfridge, Evans and Monsoon will be pulling out of the shopping centre after failing to negotiate new rent deals with landlords. It is understood that French Connection will also be closing.

A spokesman for Arcadia, which owns Evans, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis, Topshop, BHS and Miss Selfridge, confirmed that three of its brands would quit the centre.

He added that Topshop and Topman would relocate to a new site in The Mall while Dorothy Perkins and Wallis would be turned into concessions in the BHS store.

Although Monsoon, which had been trading at The Mall since the centre launched in 1998, will also close, Accessorize will remain open. East will downgrade to a concession at John Lewis at the start of February.

As for Warehouse, it is also expected also move into a new unit.

The Mall’s commercial director Jon Edwards said the centre was going through a period of change as leases were coming up for renewal, which was not unusual for a major shopping centre. He said: "A select number of stores, including several from the Arcadia group of retailers are reviewing their strategies; this may see some leave The Mall later in the year while others may move to new locations within the centre.

"We understand that the retailers are considering these changes within the context of their own wider business strategies and the widely publicised rebalancing of store portfolios that is being seen across the UK and can confirm that none of the tenants affected have had rents increased as part of the lease renewal process."

He added the centre was in negotations with several new stores to open new branches at The Mall.

"We are pleased to report that advanced negotiations are underway with a number of tenants about exciting plans to upsize and enhance stores, while a host of new names are in discussions with us about opening at The Mall. "The Mall remains a hugely popular shopping destination and a number of other retailers including Republic and Next have significantly upsized their units, while others are soon to follow suit."
