Countdown to Oldbury Fun Run 2013 in aid of charity CLIC Sargent launched

JOGGERS and athletes across the region are being urged to dig out their trainers and limber up for one of the largest fun runs in the West.

Preparations for the Oldbury Fun Run, due to take place on June 16 this year, are already well underway and organisers are calling on former participants and newbies to sign up to the sporting event of 2013.

Since launching in the early 1980s the popular race has raised well over £50,000 for its sponsored charity CLIC Sargent and several other local causes, including an impressive £10,000 last year alone.

Committee member Chris Awde said: "We are so proud not only of raising these funds but also that everybody who joins us on the day, runners and spectators, all say it’s such an enjoyable and great fun day for all the family.

"The Oldbury Fun Run is now regarded as one of the premier running events in the area by many top running clubs and also by the local people in the area."

More than 700 runners took part in the Oldbury Fun Run last summer.

The 40-strong team of helpers and volunteers who made sure the event took place without a hitch last year, did not waste any time to organise the 2013 run. In fact, they have been hard at work planning the race ever since the last runner crossed the finish line.

Over the years the run has become a major regional gathering for athletes, but also for children, families and those just after for a nice day out. As well as the race itself, the day will include a tug-of-war competition, live entertainment and a fun fair. Mr Awde added: "Over the last few years we have tried to make the event not only a major sporting event but also a real family day out. "And in true British village style we have entertainment for all ages through village stalls, Punch and Judy shows for the children, a display of classic cars, music from a local band in the Anchor pub garden, hot food and locally made ice creams and much more."

The Fun Run will kick off on Father’s Day at 11am.
