A NEW exhibition on the workhouse of Yate and Chipping Sodbury opens next week.

The History of Sodbury Union Workhouse is on display at Yate Heritage Centre from February 21 until April 13.

The exhibit charts the history of the local union workhouse, now known as Ridgewood Community Centre.

Community heritage officer David Hardill said: "The display looks at the lot of the poor before the Victorians and what life was like in workhouses from the Victorians into the 20th century.

"The exhibition will feature many original artefacts from the workhouse including clothes and fittings from the building.

"Schools and children are welcome to discover the history of this forbidding building."
