A NEW detective series starring former Doctor Who David Tennant will be broadcast next week featuring some scenes filmed in Yate.

A number of locations in the town were used in ITV’s new drama Broadchurch.

Production company Kudos filmed on the Road to Nowhere, at Stanshawes Garage on Westerleigh Road and Eggs Hill Lane Play Area.

South Gloucestershire Council said filming took place on September 10, 2012 and the Road to Nowhere was used as a unit base on the day for all three locations.

Broadchurch is set in a fictional village of the same name on the Dorset coast and was filmed largely on the Jurassic Coast as well as in various locations around Bristol including Portishead, Clevedon and Yate.

Starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, the series explores what happens to a small community when it suddenly comes under the full glare of the media spotlight following the mysterious death of an 11-year-old boy.

Writer and creator Chris Chibnall, whose previous work includes United, Torchwood, Law & Order: UK and Doctor Who, said: "Broadchurch focuses on a small British community which finds itself at the eye of a storm. In the wake of one boy's death, the residents of Broadchurch come under scrutiny and suspicion.

"It's a story of scale and intimacy, as the lives of the characters are laid bare."

Executive producer Jane Featherstone said: "We're proud to have cast an outstanding array of Britain's finest performers to appear in Broadchurch.

"The drama is a snapshot of modern Britain."

The series is not the first time Yate will feature in a major drama. Casualty producers regularly used the Road to Nowhere to film accident scenes before moving to Wales and period drama Larkrise to Candelford had scenes filmed in a container unit on one of the town’s industrial estates.

Meanwhile, Winterbourne will feature in a new Walkers crisps advert. Football hero and presenter Gary Lineker is to return as the long-running advertising campaign’s Mr Nice Guy in an advert filmed partly on Church Road in the village. Gary drove a tractor past Winterbourne Medieval Barn during a day of filming which also saw the star take to Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Broadchurch begins on Monday, March 4 at 9pm on ITV 1.
