Thousands apply for 100 jobs at new Marks & Spencer, Costa Coffee and Sports Direct shops in Yate Shopping Centre
MORE than 100 new jobs are to be created at Yate Shopping Centre this spring.
The positions will be at three new shops currently being built on East Walk.
Marks and Spencer is due to open a Simply Food store on June 5, Costa Coffee will open on April 22 and Sports Direct will open in mid-May in new units opposite the Tesco Extra supermarket.
Unprecedented numbers of people have applied for the jobs with 35 people applying for each position.
Within two weeks of the jobs being advertised on the Yate Shopping Centre website and Facebook page, there have been over 3,500 inquires.
Shopping centre manager Andrew Lowrey said: “We have had unprecedented interest in these jobs and the inquiries are still flooding in. There is certainly no lack of interest and it is very much an operator’s market with them being able to be very selective from a wide range of applicants of all ages and abilities.”
He added: “The three new retail shops are due to be handed over to the operators later this month when the operators will start their fitting-out. At the same time they will be looking to finalise the selection of staff and on-site training ready for the openings.
“Over the last few months there have been up to 100 construction workers employed on site through the contractors ISG Pearce so the centre is certainly pulling its weight in helping to boost the local economy.”
The well-known High Street brands have been highly anticipated by the shopping centre and shoppers alike.
