Frenchay Village Museum to hold historic talk on pioneering alpinist Edward Whymper

A TALK on the impressive ascent of pioneering alpinist Edward Whymper is the subject of a Frenchay Village Musuem talk next week.

Edward Whymper astounded the climbing community when he conquered the Matterhorn, in the Pennine Alps on the border between Switzerland and Italy, which had been believed to be unclimbable. He then went around the country giving lantern shows of his alpine adventures.

Peter Berg, archivist of the Alpine Club, will recreate Whymper's lantern show using original Victorian glass slides during the talk on Tuesday, March 19 (7.30pm) at Stapleton and Begbrook Community Association on Frenchay Park Road. The historic show is part of the events to mark the centenary of the death of famous alpinist Frank Tuckett, of Frenchay.

An exhibition is on display at Frenchay Village Museum until April 27. Call0117 9570942 for opening hours.
