Save our CAB campaign raises £3,730 in just four weeks
9:46am Wednesday 20th March 2013 in News By Marion Sauvebois
THE GAZETTE'S Save our CAB campaign has been bolstered by a mammoth donation from Thornbury Round Table.
The prominent club, which raises funds for various causes in the town, has joined the raft of groups and locals determined to spare the Citizens Advice Bureau from closure by contributing £1,200 to the appeal.
This brings the Gazette campaign's total to £3,730 just four weeks after its official launch.
It has brought the threatened charity ever closer to securing the £12,000 it desperately needs by the end of May to continue providing free and invaluable financial and legal advice to locals.
Member Liam Williams told the Gazettte: "When Thornbury Round Table members heard about the potential closure of the local Citizen Advice Bureau, they were concerned about the effect the loss of this vital resource would have on the local community.
"The CAB provides a wide range of advice and support, often when people are at their most concerned, so we wanted to try to ensure this valuable service remains accessible to local people."
The sum will help pay for the wages of two supervisors at the bureau, whose role is to ensure that customers leave the centre with the right information and referral details. They also play a crucial part in training volunteers to the highest possible standard.
South Gloucestershire CAB chief executive Christine Kenny said the donation was a testament to the spirit of solidarity in the area.
"The support we are receiving from the community is truly wonderful and just goes to show how much people really do care about their fellow citizens," she said.
"It's heartening to see the community pulling together to support us, and through us, all the Thornbury residents who need our help."
Residents who have not yet contributed still have ample time to do so.
"We are grateful to everyone who has been able to contribute to ensuring the CAB's continued presence in Thornbury and, if you haven't done so yet, please do make a donation or come along to some of the great fundraisers being organized through the Save Our CAB campaign and support us," Mrs Kenny added.
The Gazette, in conjuction with the Swan in Thornbury, will hold a series of events at the venue.
These include: March 31 - raffle April 31 - raffle May 2 - pamper night May 11- barn dance May 31 - raffle
