THRILL-seekers will be able to ride the waves at Britain's first mulit-million pound surfing lake in Almondsbury and Easter Compton.

The Wave: Bristol has revealed it has secured a 40-acre site which straddles land at Over Court Farm in Almondsbury and Washingpool Farm in Easter Compton to create a £6.2 million in-land surfing experience.

Owners Nick Hounsfield and Tobin Coles had previously considered building the attraction at the Bristol and West sports ground along the Portway near Sea Mills but abandonned the idea as the 13-acre site was too small for the project.

The surfing lake could help create between 40 and 50 jobs.

Mr Hounsfield said the firm would be collaborating with outdoor activity centre Mojo Active and share use of the site.

"This is a great space that maintains a rural feel whilst also being located close to the city," he said.

"We want to make sure that the destination is accessible for people of all ages, all abilities and all backgrounds. We have made contact with the local transport planning teams regarding public transport links and cycle paths."

At the centre of The Wave: Bristol will be a freshwater lagoon. The latest Wavegarden® technology will generate surfing waves of up to 1.6 metres high, at a rate of approximately 120 waves per hour.

Experienced surfers will be able to enjoy rides of up to 20 seconds while beginners will have the opportunity to learn in a safe environment.

The attraction will include adventure trails, an education space, changing facilities and a café.

The company is currently working on the lake's design and has already approached South Gloucestershire Council about the plans. It will soon begin consulting with residents.

"We have had preliminary discussions with South Gloucestershire Council and will soon be talking to local residents and people more widely in South Gloucestershire and Bristol to gather feedback on our proposed plans," said Mr Hounsfield.

"We have sent a letter to residents and are talking to local elected representatives to explain our proposals. We will be contacting them in the coming weeks about how they can get involved and have their say."

The project has received the backing of Business West.

James Durie, executive director, said: "We are right behind this exciting project, which not only will bring surfing to Bristol and the surrounding area, but will also give local people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to be outdoors, have fun and get in touch with nature. Surfing is so much part of life in the South West and this project is great news for local people and the visitors we attract."
