A MOTORCYCLIST and his pillion were seriously injured in a collision on the M5 between Clevedon Junction 20 and Portishead Junction 19 yesterday.

During the accident, the rider and his passenger slid onto the hard shoulder on the northbound carriageway.

Police were called to the scene at 8.05pm.

The pillion was flown to Frenchay Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The rider also sustained serious wounds but they are not thought to be life- threatening.

Police closed off the motorway to allow the air ambulance to land, at 9.10pm. The third lane was later re-opened whilst officers from the road policing collision investigation unit conducted a detailed examination of the scene.

The road was cleared and fully re-opened at about 10.45pm The collision investigation unit would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident and may have information to help the police investigation.
