Organisers hope for double the numbers at second Sodbury Sportive
THE second annual Sodbury Sportive is due to take to the roads this weekend.
Hundreds of cyclists are expected to gear up for the event, run by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club in aid of various charities, this Sunday, August 18 (registration from 7am).
Participants, who include serious sportsmen and women as well as those eager to complete a personal challenge, will have the choice of three distances over routes which all take in stunning countryside and views.
In the inaugural 2012 event, 376 riders took part raising £6,404 for various Rotary charities.
Organiser and Rotarian Bill Bennett said he was hoping those figures would double in 2013.
“This is the second Sodbury Sportive and this year we are hoping for over 750 riders and we are well on the way to achieving this,” he said.
“It will be a fantastic event for all riders of all abilities – you can choose from a 30, 60 or 100-mile ride.”
Last year road cyclist Phil Bayton, who competed for Great Britain in the 1972 Olympics, officially opened the sportive.
He said: “From the moment I arrived I was impressed by the friendliness of everyone. Every detail was covered and from a personal point of view it was one of the most enjoyable days I have spent on the bike.”
This year’s event is sponsored by Yate bike company Saddleback and will start from Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club on Wickwar Road.
There will be mechanical assistance from local cycle shop Blast Bikes at the start and along the route and Waitrose, which is due to open a new store in Chipping Sodbury in October, is providing free refreshments for all those taking part.
New branch manager Rich Clare said: “I’m delighted to support such a professionally-run local sporting event. Cyclists taking part are going to work up an appetite and I hope will appreciate the pasties, quiche and salad to re-fuel them at the finishing line.
“I’m very keen that Waitrose Chipping Sodbury plays a positive role in the local community and am pleased to see this start to happen before we even open in autumn and as we just begin to recruit for partners to work at the shop.”
