Former Purton landlady enjoys retirement with ancient budgie
A GRANDMOTHER from Woodmancote has been enjoying her retirement with her budgie for over 16 years, with the bird now thought to be more than 100-years-old in budgie years.
Jennifer Lord, 81, who regularly contributes poems to the Gazette’s letters page, is firm friends with her feathery companion Toowee, who is believed to be around 17-years-old.
The yellow and green bird is a keen listener to Classic FM and is allowed the radio on when the former landlady of the Berkeley Arms in Purton leaves the house.
He was a surprise present for Ms Lord when her grandson James brought him on the back of his motorbike 16-years ago.
Her son Tim, 61, from Badminton, said the pair had been inseparable ever since.
"James brought it back from a local pet shop on the back of his motorbike and it has thrived ever since. It has been a great companion for her," he said.
"It is certainly quite a pampered budgie and it even says a few words."
