Record number of cyclists take to Chipping Sodbury streets for the annual Sodbury Sportive
MORE than double the number of cyclists took part in a second annual Chipping Sodbury event than last year’s inaugural race.
Almost 600 cyclists got on their bikes for this year’s Sodbury Sportive on Sunday, August 18.
This year cyclists had the choice of three distances – 30, 60 and 100 miles – catering for all levels of ability and fitness.
Over 100 riders tackled the challenging 100-mile route.
Cyclists set off from Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club at 8am and followed a route that took participants through some of the prettiest highways and byways combining some challenging steep climbs with flat and fast sections of the Cotswold Edge.
Last year’s sportive raised £6,400 and organisers said they expect this year’s takings to exceed this, possibly by up to 50 per cent.
Organiser Bill Bennett from the Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club said: “We are absolutely delighted at the resounding success of this our second annual sportive and to have raised such a substantial amount for charity.
“From the feedback received it is clear that the entrants enjoyed themselves with many commenting positively on the excellent route, marshalling, signage and the brilliant choice of food and friendly service at food stations.”
The 2014 Sodbury Sportive is scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 17.
