HORSERIDERS made up for lost time at the Tytherington Gymkhana this year after heavy flooding forced organisers to cancel the equestrian and dog show last summer.

Hundreds of visitors and participants travelled with their favourite steed or pet from the four corners of the region to Boyts Farm in the village for the 45th annual Horse and Dog Show on Saturday.

One of the 40 volunteers on the day, Adam Mann, told the Gazette that the popular event allowed villagers to rally together and show a little community spirit.

"Last year the field was flooded so they couldn't run it, so it was already a big improvement. I think everyone had a good day."

He added: "It's really good for the village, that's why people put so much effort to get it going. It shows village spirit and it's quite fun."

This competition, which was launched in the 1960s, has raised more than £25,000 over the past ten years for local charities. This year the show collected a commendable £3,000 for Paul's Place, a group based in Coalpit Heath which provides support for adults with disabilities, and village organisations.

"The gymkhana is out of the old school of village entertainment," added chairman Hugh Johnson. "It's very traditional and that's why people say they enjoy it so much."

As well as the horse and dog shows visitors were invited to enter a raffle and enjoyed refreshments and homemade treats.
