Channel 5's Milkshake presenters open new play area alongside Yate Tesco Mum of the Year
CHILDREN’S television presenters were on hand in Yate to officially unveil a new playground.
Jen Pringle and Olivia Birchenough, from Channel 5’s morning programme Milkshake, met youngsters and staff from Ridgewood Pre-school who were celebrating the opening of the new facility.
The duo opened the £18,000 playground featuring a teepee-style hut, wooden poles for climbing and making dens, water barrels and a permanent sandpit with a sliding roof. The natural garden was created by design firm Jane's Pond from what was previously described as a prison exercise yard following a grant from South Gloucestershire Council’s New Homes Bonus.
Mum-of-three and chairman of the pre-school committee, Mireille Williams, who was named Tesco Mum of the Year in the community category earlier this year, pioneered the project.
"We worked around the clock to get everything finished and ready for the kids coming back to school," she said. "Never, ever in a million years did I expect to be standing in our now revamped playground."
The new playground follows Mireille’s one-woman mission to save the pre-school from financial collapse, a feat which earned her the mum of the year title.
"Meeting the other Tesco Mum of the Year winners in London gave me renewed energy and power," said Mireille. "After hearing some of their incredible stories I was driven to do more in my community. And I felt that nothing could stop me."
Only expecting to be awarded half of the money, the pre-school community was stunned to find out they had won the full amount.
"We didn’t have time to celebrate, we had to get working," added Mireille. "We had such a small window of time.
"We have created a fabulous play and learning area for over 40 children and saved the pre-school for future generations.
"Lots of people have been involved in this journey but the final stages of this massive achievement have been down to the incredible belief that those women at the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards have had in me."
