Yate Town Council objects to extended Morrisons delivery hours
OBJECTIONS have been raised after a multi-national supermarket applied to extend its delivery hours in Yate.
Morrisons is seeking permission for HGV drivers to deliver to the store on Station Road from 6am to 9.30pm Monday to Saturday on a permanent basis.
The firm successfully applied for the increase in hours last year and was given temporary permission for one year, which expired on August 10.
The company’s agent says it has received no complaints from neighbours in nearby Home Orchard over the extended deliveries which were increased from 7.30am to 8pm.
A spokesman said: “WM Morrisons seeks to extend the hours of delivery to allow them to deliver to the store from 6am to 9.30pm Monday to Saturday. This is essential to allow Morrisons to unload the vehicle and restock the shelves for their 7am opening.”
They said a noise assessment had been carried out.
“It concludes that increasing the delivery times to the store by 30 minutes earlier in the morning Monday to Saturday will not have an adverse impact in terms of noise disturbance on local residents.
“The previous approval demonstrates that this variation is acceptable in principle and it should be noted that no complaints were made by local residents during the previous temporary period.”
However, Yate town councillors are unhappy with the plans it will have detrimental effect on residents.
Cllr Chris Willmore said: “An extension from 6am is way too early.
“We are talking about very big lorries which will no doubt arrive before 6am. But even at 6am it is jolly early to be say there with engines running outside people’s bedroom windows.”
Dwain White, who lives in Home Orchard, said residents already had to put up with trucks parked in the road at the back of the supermarket overlooking people’s back gardens.
He said: “Every morning trucks do three point turns hitting the railings put up as in the past a lorry drove into the garden.
“The noise from unloading of the lorries goes on into the night and starts early in the morning. We have no rest from this.
“I feel extending these times will greater the amount of noise we have to put up with and the lack of privacy we have.”
