Wotton Community Sports Foundation unveils new pitches at Katharine Lady Berkeley's School, Wotton-under-Edge
HOCKEY players took to the new all-weather pitch in Wotton-under-Edge for the first time.
The state-of-the-art facilities, provided by the Wotton Community Sports Foundation (WCSF), are adjacent to Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School.
There is one full-sized, sand dressed, all-weather, multi-sport pitch and a half-sized 3G pitch.
Both are floodlit and fully covered by CCTV cameras 24 hours a day.
The large pitch is available for hockey and practice sessions for football, while the smaller pitch is suited for football and rugby training, junior football matches and league games.
WCSF secretary Sarah Watt said the foundation was pleased to announce that the two pitches were open and available for bookings.
She said: "Wotton has a wealth of sporting talent and enthusiasm including 18 football teams, 11 hockey teams and one rugby team.
"Such enthusiasm and dedication deserves the best facilities and our intention is to continue to build on this latest success.
"We will continue to fundraise and plan so that in our next phase we can provide more grass football pitches, a skate park and a BMX track."
WCFS was set up in 1998 to establish outdoor sports facilities in the town, during which time volunteers have tirelessly fundraised for the project.
Wotton firm Swinhay began the building work to transform the New Road site into the pitches in April, following a generous donation from Renishaw founder Sir David McMurtry.
The recent work has also included a refurbishment to the changing facilities at the Wotton Sports Centre on the Katharine Lady Berkeley School site and a newly installed path between this site and the New Road pitches.
The official opening ceremony is taking place on Saturday, September 21 at the Wotton Sports Centre on the KLB site and New Road pitches.
There will be sports running from 9.30am to 5pm and a barbecue, beer and cider tent, fundraising stalls and children’s activities from 10.30am to 3pm.
Town crier George Carpenter and Kingswood’s Blowaway Band will be on hand to mark the momentous occasion.
