Gloucestershire Gazette comment: Welcome walkers status a boon to Dursley
WHAT great news it is that Dursley is being recognised for its beautiful countryside and excellent walks.
Hopefully the town will soon see a boost in visitor numbers as it has gained Walkers are Welcome status.
The prestigious accreditation is for the few places in the country that can both boast excellent walking pathways as well as show a healthy and considerate support of accommodating walkers.
With the help of the Dursley Welcomes Walkers group, this has been proven and the town can enjoy several benefits including advertising itself as a walking hotspot.
It will also appear on the scheme’s website for avid hikers to look at.
This will bring useful benefits to the local economy as well as ensuring footpaths and facilities for walkers are maintained in good condition, benefiting both local people and visitors.
In addition, this type of tourism boost does not require a large development such as a cinema or a shopping mall. In fact, the carbon footprint is almost non-existent. Walking holidays and the hobby of walking and hiking in general has become increasingly popular over recent years and Dursley could certainly take advantage with arguably its biggest asset, its countryside.
Being part of both the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Cotswold Way, even the most adventurous could not ask for more.
Bed and breakfasts, restaurants, cafes, shops, pubs and everything in between can look at this juncture with some optimism if they know more people, from further afield than ever before, may be traipsing through Dursley any time soon.
