Volunteers transform Cam's youth centre
YOUNG people have given Cam’s youth centre a fresh new look and gained construction qualifications in the process.
Cam Youth and Community Centre has been thoroughly refurbished by young people as part of the South of Stroud Youth Partnership’s (SOSYP) summer activities schedule.
SOSYP offers youth provision through organisation Young Gloucestershire.
The summer programme was rounded off with the Volunteer it Yourself project to remodel and renovate the youth centre at the end of August.
The three-week voluntary scheme ran every evening, bringing together four youth centres and their communities in Cam, Dursley, Wotton-under-Edge and Berkeley.
SOSYP co-ordinator at Young Gloucestershire, Vix Thomas, said the volunteers had worked very hard plastering, painting and making benches from old pallets.
Thirty young people also gained a City and Guilds certificate in building and construction and picked up new skills they will be able to use in the future. Local tradespeople mentored the volunteers, who were given the opportunity to try the skills out themselves before going to work on the building.
Some of the jobs including fitting a door frame, dry lining a wall, skimming, building flower pots and glossing skirting boards.
Ms Thomas said: “The young people worked so hard for the duration of the project, coming together, learning skills such as teamwork and cooperation, as well as carpentry, plastering and painting.
“I am so proud of what they have achieved and the centre looks amazing!”
Each of the four towns has a youth centre run by Young Gloucestershire as part of SOSYP and is encouraging the young people who attend to develop their skills even further by hopefully running smaller similar projects in the future.
