A MAN was arrested on suspicion of stealing catalytic converters found in the wreckage of an abandoned car in Pilning.

Nine Mercedes catalytic converters were discovered at 1am on Thursday, October 10 by officers in a car, which had been involved in a crash and dumped in the village.

A search was launched involving a helicopter, dog handler and local beat officers.

A man was arrested at about 2am. He has now been bailed until Friday, October 25.

The incident comes after thieves unbolted and cut 14 cat converters in Chipping Sodbury and Thornbury last month.

Cats are increasingly targeted because of the current high prices of the metals used inside them.

Neighbourhood Inspector Bob Evely said: “Criminals have been targetting vehicles with high ground clearance like vans, pick-ups and SUVs. It only takes a few minutes to cut or unbolt the catalytic converter. Lately they’ve been taking them from Peugeot and Citroen cars, even jacking them up to get at the part.

“It’s really important to call 999 immediately if you see someone acting suspiciously near a car or van. It’s also important to tell us about any theft of catalytic converters – or if you find them abandoned. You can report online through our website or by calling 101.”

Most of the cars affected were parked outside overnight.

Police are advising locals to keep their vehicle in a secure garage at night-time, install motion activated security lighting and mark their catalytic converter with etching kit or fit a ‘cat’ clamp or alarm to deter thieves.
