A CAREERS event for young people in Stroud district aiming to enhance students’ awareness of the opportunities and employment their qualifications and abilities could lead to is being to be held.
Stroud Ambitions will take place from 9am to 3pm on Wednesday, November 6 at Stratford Park Leisure Centre, is being organised by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, Stroud District Council and eight local secondary schools.
Additionally, after the daytime event, a careers and higher education event will run from 4.30pm to 8pm for anyone who wishes to attend.
Universities, colleges and training providers will be on hand to provide advice.
Cllr Geoff Wheeler, leader of Stroud District Council, said: “This event has been organised to help meet the needs of young people and improve their prospects.
“It’s great to see already how so many local firms have agreed to be involved.”
Les Haines, chair of the Stroud Local Strategic Partnership, said young people need the skills that employers demand.
“It is important for students to have as much information as possible to help them chose the career most suited to their talents. Businesses taking part will be able to demonstrate what they need from the employees of the future to take their companies forward.”
The event follows the result of a budget consultation seminar held last year to seek the views of young people on a number of topics including the value of work experience, preparing for employment and careers advice.
Participants said they wanted careers advice at an earlier age to help them decide their GCSE choices as these can determine the future interests and paths they take into higher education and employment.
Scores of organisations have already agreed to take part in the event, including Apple Design, the Army, BT, Egypt Mill restaurant, Gloucestershire Police, Halo Films, Lloyds Bank, NHS Gloucestershire, the Royal Air Force and many more.
