THE ANNUAL Harvest celebrations were the perfect opportunity for kind-hearted pupils in Thornbury to support a vital charity very close to home.

Children at Manorbrook Primary collected tins, bags of pasta and other essentials for the town's recently launched foodbank this year.

The young philanthropists discussed the organisation’s crucial work feeding scores of families in need at a foodbank-themed Harvest assembly before handing bags of donated goods to foodbank volunteer Janet Raven.

Head teacher Angela Evans said: "Parents were invited along to see their Harvest assembly, when all classes presented their learning. Topics included why we need a foodbank, a foodbank poem, Harvest songs and some learning links to Fairtrade.

"At the end of assembly the donations were presented to Mrs Janet Raven and she gratefully accepted them, on behalf of the foodbank, praising the children for their assembly and their donations."
