STUDENTS at a Yate school have been celebrating the life and times of one of the world’s most celebrated activists.

Pupils at Brimsham Green School enjoyed a week of events dedicated to Nelson Mandela, the 95-year-old former South African president and anti-apartheid campaigner and revolutionary. They watched lunchtime films and took part in extra registration sessions and assemblies whilst learning about Mandela, his work and his legacy in lessons.

The week was run by the history department and study centre at Brimsham Green.

Head of history Elly Hoyle said: “Every year we run an event called black history month which is something marked at regional and national levels too.

“Black history month is all about promoting knowledge of the positive contributions of minority ethnic people to British society, world history and culture. We are keen to make Brimsham Green an inclusive school and also to prepare them for life and work in a diverse society.”
