POLICE are investigating after an empty car was found crashed into a lamp post in Yate.

Officers were called to Goose Green Way, at its junction with Randolph Avenue, at 2.45am on Sunday.

Another motorist reported that a car had collided with a lamp post on the roundabout. The caller had not witnessed the collision and no one was in the badly-damaged car at the time.

A police spokeswoman said despite a thorough search the driver was not found.

“We attended and found the car air bags had deployed,” she said. “We searched the area for the driver without success.

“We also checked that no one had been admitted to hospital with the sort of injury which might have been caused by the collision and spoke to the family of the registered keeper who arranged for collection of the vehicle.

“We're still making enquiries to establish whether any offences were committed in relation to the crash and anyone who saw the incident or who has any other information which could help is asked to call us on 101.”
