SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has opened nominations for the chairman's community awards 2014.

The annual awards recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution local unpaid volunteers make to life in South Gloucestershire.

Council chairman Cllr Ian Boulton said: “These awards give the council the perfect opportunity to celebrate the hard work and commitment of volunteers who dedicate their time to improve the lives of local people and bring South Gloucestershire’s communities together.

“It’s important to pay tribute to these inspirational people, and over the years we’ve been honoured to tell so many fantastic stories of their courage, commitment and community spirit.”

He added: “I am looking forward to meeting everyone and congratulating them on all their hard work, so please nominate an unsung hero today.”

The award ceremony will take place in May where winners will be handed their awards by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter.

Nominations are open until Friday, March 21. Suggestions for nominations include people who have contributed to community development, promoting equality, arts, sports, play, environment, working with older or young people, advice and advocacy or have simply been a good neighbour.
