SHARPNESS Dock played host to one of the widest ships to ever visit the port.
The Arctic Dawn sailed into Sharpness Dock on Wednesday, January 29, on her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to collect gas metering systems for export to South Korea.
With a beam of 17metres, she is widest vessel to visit Sharpness in recent years.
Staff from the Canal and River Trust at Sharpness worked hard alongside teams from Sharpness Dock Ltd, the Gloucester Harbour Trustees and the Gloucester pilots to make sure she docked safely.
The Arctic Dawn is fitted with her own lifting gear which towered above the dock while she was in port.
Two skid mounted shipments of Alderley gas metering systems, each weighing more than 36 tonnes, were loaded aboard.
These systems are heading for a floating liquefied natural gas facility in South Korea called Prelude. Reaching 1,601 feet in length, Prelude is now the biggest floating vessel in the world and is 150 feet longer than the Empire State Building is high.
Alderley, a local designer and manufacturer of metering and control system for the oil and gas industry, frequently uses Sharpness Dock to transport equipment to customers all over the world.
