A FORMER Poet Laureate turned countryside campaigner will be speaking in Gloucestershire.
Sir Andrew Motion, national president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), will be the guest speaker at Gloucestershire CPRE’s AGM on Thursday, April 10.
The charity promotes the diversity of rural England, advocating ways to preserve its future.
Sir Andrew will be speaking about his love for the countryside and the importance of preserving rural landscapes.
Poet Laureate from 1999 until 2009, he is well known for airing his strong CPRE views, many of which relate directly to Gloucestershire’s countryside, including his criticism of the government for “speaking up for green field housing estates rather than green fields themselves.”
He has also said that the countryside is in greater danger than it has ever been in his lifetime.
He took over as president of CPRE from popular author Bill Bryson in 2012 and is a professor of creative writing at Royal Holloway, University of London.
CPRE Gloucestershire’s AGM will be held at Berkeley Castle from 2.30pm April 10.
