TEAMS of fundraisers will once again be taking to the tracks in Yate for a day and night this summer in aid of Cancer Research UK.

With a multitude of fancy dress costumes, charity supporters will take part in the 24-hour Relay for Life at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex between Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6 (12oon-12noon).

One member of each team will need to stay on the track at any one time to complete the challenge, which is now in its ninth year in Yate.

Liam Craddock, from the organising committee, said: “Relay is the biggest worldwide fundraising event with relays happening in countries as far as way as Australia.

“It is a challenging but rewarding event which is a celebration of all the fundraising events that have happened throughout the year.

“To keep spirits high there is our 24-hour DJ, as well as stalls, entertainment and food.”

The relay will open with a guest of honour lap with cancer survivors and caregivers completing a lap of the track before the teams take to the tracks.

Laps then have different fun themes and team members are encouraged to bring their families along to watch and cheer them on.

At dusk, a poignant candlelit ceremony is held when the word HOPE is lit up by candle bags in memory of all those who we have lost their battle with cancer and in acknowledgement of the hope for future advances in treatment.

Last year more than 300 people took part in 30 teams to raise more than £35,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The Yate event has raised a total of £250,000 in its history.
