A NEW smartphone app to help South Gloucestershire patients find their nearest health provider has been launched in the district.

The South Gloucestershire Service Finder app, which was launched last month for iPhones, has now been developed for android phones too.

The technology uses GPS mapping to find users’ closest health service and that which is most appropriate to their needs. It has been developed by South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) in support of the ‘Think ABC before A&E’ NHS campaign, which aims to stop unnecessary A&E visits.

Dr Jonathan Hayes, GP chairman of the CCG, said: “This app enables South Gloucestershire residents to quickly locate and contact nearby GP practices, pharmacies, minor injury units, hospitals and A&E departments or call NHS 111 for anytime free medical advice.

“They can also store notes and set up alerts for appointments.

“It’s really important that people know exactly where to go for the right treatment. A&E departments are extremely busy, and people coming to them with a minor injury and illness may have to face longer waits.”

He added: “More and more people are using apps to find local services, so this seemed a great way to support our winter campaign.

“The app will help many residents find out what is the best service for their condition, and also help them find it. That could be a minor injury unit or pharmacy, or even a call to NHS 111, before A&E.”
