SOUTH Gloucestershire will welcome home its new Queen of the snow in style next week.

To mark the official homecoming of Jenny Jones, the first British athlete to win an Olympic medal on snow, the district is hosting an open top bus tour to give locals a chance to celebrate the 30-year-old snowboarder’s record-breaking achievement.

Jenny, from Downend, won bronze in slopestyle snowboarding at Sochi 2014. Her medal was Team GB’s first in the winter Olympics and the first we have achieved on snow.

Cllr Ian Boulton (Lab, Staple Hill), chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, will join Jenny on board the open top bus on a tour from Downend into central Bristol next Monday, March 3.

The parade will start at 4pm to give schoolchildren, including pupils at Winterbourne International Academy and Hambrook Primary School where Jenny went to school, a chance to join in the celebrations.

The procession will finish outside Bristol City Council’s offices on College Green before a civic reception led by city mayor George Ferguson takes place inside City Hall.

Cllr Boulton said: “All systems are go to give Sochi Olympic bronze medallist Jenny Jones the homecoming she deserves.

“It is a real pleasure to work with Bristol City Council to plan a parade through Downend into Bristol for a civic reception at City Hall. Jenny is hoping that the 4pm start on Monday 3 March will mean that school children and students will be able to come and see her and I hope to see as many people as possible lining the streets to cheer her on.

“I’m looking forward to meeting Jenny and her guests on Monday on what promises to be a very proud day for the region as we celebrate this fantastic sporting achievement.”

Although she is still coming to terms with all the attention Jenny said the homecoming was "very lovely".

Jenny, who went to South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, formerly Filton College, has become an overnight celebrity since winning her medal and has now appeared on countless television programmes including The One Show, The Jonathan Ross Show and ITV’s Daybreak.

The parade will leave Downend for Westerleigh Road, Cleeve Road, Badminton Road, and Downend Road before making its way into Bristol.
