BERKELEY Castle has won a heritage award for its dining provision in its novel yurt café.

The historic site has been highly commended in the Best Eating Out category at this year’s Hudson’s Heritage Awards.

Through 11 categories, these awards reward the best visitor experiences at heritage attractions around the country.

The awards were presented at Goldsmiths Hall in London on Tuesday, February 18.

Sarah Greenwood, publisher of the guide Hudson’s Historic Houses & Gardens, said: “These awards lead the way in gaining public recognition for some of the best experiences to be enjoyed in the UK. All our winners give their visitors great experiences and we are immensely proud to help celebrate what makes heritage places such a pleasure and such a vital part of our culture”.

Housed within the walled gardens of the castle next to the Butterfly House, the Yurt Restaurant offers coffees and cakes as well as hearty lunches in the traditional Mongolian structure.

Berkeley Castle owner Charles Berkeley said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been highly commended. It is testament to the high standards and commitment to excellence we offer our visitors to ensure they have the best possible experience. Receiving this award is a wonderful acknowledgement and recognition that Berkeley is among the best heritage attractions in the UK.”

Loyd Grossman, of cooking sauce fame, presented the award and praised the innovative design of the Gloucestershire tearoom.
