STAFF from a Dursley supermarket made good their pledge to carry a pound in weight for every pound donated to their chosen charity as they trekked to the chain's branch in Stroud.

As a result, ten employees from Sainsbury’s on Castle Street each carried 25lbs in weight for the nine-mile challenge, walking through Uley and up past Coaley viewpoint before heading through Selsley.

The march took just under four hours for the intrepid crew, who raised just over £250 for Sport Relief.

Commercial team leader Ryan Chambers said they hoped that the walk, as well as other fundraising activities being held by the store in the next few weeks, would prove worthy enough for further backing by the public.

“It certainly put us to the challenge and we may have got lost a few times!” he said.

“But we believe the cause that Sports Relief embodies is truly worthy of our time and efforts.

"We hope to continue the charity focus forwards throughout March with bigger fundraising events.”

Mr Chambers added that he would like to thank the team at the Stroud store for their hospitality after providing food and drink for the hikers.

Joining Mr Chambers on the walk was, Jason Close, Giles Mchugh, Joel Stoneman, Ronnie Williams, Dan Cook, Dan Drewett, Kirsten O’Neill, Angus Clements and William Arkle.

As part of the fundraising for Sport Relief, there will be department challenges in the store including a three-legged race, 100m race and a swimming challenge at Dursley Swimming Pool.

If customers or members of the public wish to donate, there are fundraising buckets around the store and a collection point can be found at the customer services desk.
