THE STANDARD of adult education in Gloucestershire is on the up, according to the latest Ofsted inspection.

Gloucestershire County Council’s Adult Education Service has been given an overall rating of ‘good’ based on three key areas of review - outcomes for learners, teaching learning and assessment and leadership and management.

The result shows a significant improvement from the previous Ofsted report.

Visual arts came out on top for teaching, learning and assessment and rated as outstanding.

Foundation English, Foundation Maths and Community Learning were rated as good and praised for successfully motivating learners.

Echoed throughout the report was that learners enjoy their courses, develop good personal and social skills as a result and participate enthusiastically in lessons.

Managers and teachers were commended for their commitment to supporting learners to gain jobs.

Progression from courses in English and mathematics to other courses, such as information and communication technology and business administration, and then into employment is high, according to the report.

In addition, the Adult Education Services’ work with partner organisations was described as exceptional.

By working with external providers the service ensures the same standard of course at a wide variety of venues.

Highlighted in the report is the provision for those who are anxious about returning to learning after a long period of absence from education or training.

Cllr Paul McLain, cabinet member responsible for adult education, said the success was a result of the hard work and commitment demonstrated by everyone involved.

“Whilst we are celebrating our achievements we will continue to work hard to make sure that we are improving year on year to support adult learners throughout the county to succeed,” he said.

“If you are considering taking up a new hobby, studying for qualifications or undertaking training then we would encourage you find out more about the adult education in Gloucestershire.”
