PARENTS and teachers faced off in a netball match at Uley Primary School while the pupils competed in cycling marathon in a bid to raise funds for Sport Relief.

The seven-a-side game was closely fought on Wednesday, March 19 but the parents eventually beat the teachers 23-21, with scores of pupils cheering during the game.

For their part of the charity event, the students battled in their respective houses on exercise bikes to see who could cycle the longest over the length of one day.

The children, aged four to 11, each spent a few minutes each to pedal on the bikes and rack up the miles, with the Roald Dahl house eventually coming out on top.

As well as the activities, teachers and students alike joined in the fun of dressing up as sportsmen for the day, including cyclists and mountaineers.

While others turned up in wetsuits and tae kwon do gis, headteacher David Warren surely won best dressed as he came complete in his hockey goalkeeping gear.

From the donations and selling of refreshments, the event raised £103 with some sponsorship money still to come forward and organiser Sara Delrosa was pleased with the result.

“The day was really good fun,” she said.

“The children loved it, they wanted to get back on the bikes and the netball match was a really good way to improve parent teacher relations and get everyone involved.

“A big thank you must go out to Chris Baker from Haulage limited because they donated two bikes for the day.”

The PE teacher added that the netball match was now going to be a weekly fixture for the staff and she was looking at holding another similar event in the future.
