COLOURFUL flowers were on show in Wotton at the weekend’s spring show.

Wotton-under-Edge Gardening Club’s annual spring flower show took place in the Baptist Church Hall on Rope Walk on Saturday, April 12.

The event is smaller than the club’s main autumn show and does not carry produce or food classes, instead focussing on the beautiful blooms that abound at this time of year.

Show organisers said the show had proved popular, with over 100 entries and 60 visitors in addition to the club’s own members.

Club chairman David Wilson said all the plants on sale had been snapped up and the steady flow of people during the day had made for a surprisingly relaxing atmosphere.

He said there had been a wonderful selection of locally-grown flowers on show.

“I was very surprised that there were so many daffodils considering the weather has been so mild,” he explained. “I think we just hit the right weekend when the daffodils were ending and the tulips starting.”

Kate Tucker was the overall winner with the most points across various classes, while Marian Burrows scooped the best exhibit for a magnificent vase of daffodils, featuring 30 to 40 stems, including different varieties of the flower.

The club’s premier autumn show and plant sale will be in the town hall on Saturday, September 13, featuring vegetables, fruit, flowers, plants and cookery classes.
